Provenance:: European private collection. The muscular male nudes are in strong contrast to the gentle beauty of Venus. Rottenhammer, to whom this painting can be attributed, succeeded in merging the traditions of Flemish-German Mannerism with contemporary elements of Upper Italian art, particularly from Venice in his oeuvre. Alongside his delicate cabinet paintings, Rottenhammer painted large format works for certain patrons, which are generally influenced by the work of Tintoretto or Veronese.
